Traditionally, the gargoyle was a guardian and protector of the good. This piece expresses the idea that the guardian of good must meet evil with equal strength, which is why the he appears so sinister and even demonic. The “ball” he rests upon is a symbol of the sun, long associated with divine beings of good intent. It is also the power he draws upon as twilight and evening approach.
